Being from Omaha, I have the pleasure of getting to hear Wendy Townley on my local radio station. I always enjoy hearing her talk about her adventures and experiences. I think her story is a great one on how she was discovered and the paths that led her to where she is today. I got this book on my Kindle after hearing that it was available and for me, it was a very short read. I tend to devour books very quickly. But I found myself laughing and I was finished with it before I knew it. It's a great light-hearted collection and I would recommend it and do so quite frequently.Product details

With a honed gift for bringing the ordinary to life, Wendy Townley is a literary voice on the ascendancy. Her brilliant new book 'Nerdy Thirty' is thick with story, textured with irony and colorful with humor. Her reflections on the undramatic are courageously honest and heart-felt, captivatingly hilarious and at times tinged with the ironic sadness that accompanies each of our coming of age.
I couldn't help but want to put the book down so to savor it and prolong the pleasure of its parlance, but found myself finishing it in one sitting. Completely human, welcoming and accessible, 'Nerdy Thirty' is a snapshot of what it means to be the very best of ourselves. Though a self-proclaimed, "grown-up nerd," Wendy's meandering reflections are more than a mere coming-of-age story, but are profoundly intimate, delightful and refreshing.
Nerdy Thirty by Wendy Townley is a book composed of short quirky stories about Wendy Townley's life. The stories are humorous, interesting and sometimes bizarre. My favorite story is Slut Be A Lady Tonight. I thought it was quite humorous. It's about a lady who was pretending to be host of a rock radio station who was trying to get an interview with Wendy's boyfriend's band in a bar. Some of the stories are about life lessons learned and weird things that happened to Wendy Townley on her way to being thirty. This is an okay read. I liked most of the stories but there were some that seemed so random, I didn't know what to make of them. However life is random and everyone's experience is different. Wendy Townley has compiled her experiences, good and bad in this novella.
I was really looking to love this book. Duh... I'm a "Nerdy Thirty!" I'm not ashamed of my nerdiness. I embrace it and all that comes with it.
When I started Nerdy Thirty there was a pretty constant pace. I often times would laugh out loud or smirk but then something happened. I loved when Wendy went into detail about her first experience at a rodeo. She even gave a history lesson about the rodeo for us history buffs. But then... By the time I got to page 34 I felt like she was rambling. I instantly felt like, "Honey get on with now!" But after that things just weren't the same for me.
This book was full of hits and misses for me. Sometimes I liked the essays and at other times I couldn't wait to get to the last page (97 pages).
Then I was done...and I made my notes. After reading books I always write my lasting thoughts. So here goes (exactly what I wrote), "went from funny to okay to girl what's your point?" I felt like the delivery was just ...
However she did take me back down memory lane as she reminisced about our addictive days of AOL chat, Delia's catalog's and Claire's. Although we came from different backgrounds we enjoyed some of the same things as young girls. Things like that make me smile. We are all the same in some way or the other.
One last thing that baffled me was
"He joked about getting me into a cowboy hat just once that weekend, and he succeeded. Knowing my love for the color purple (the hue, not the movie), he made a beeline for one of vendors. He plucked a purple cowboy hat from the shelf and placed it atop my head."
Is it just me... why did she say, "the hue, not the movie." Really! What was the reason for pointing that out... Did it mean she didn't like the movie or did she think the reader would be confused?
All-in-all this book was okay. It started off interesting but it didn't keep me the entire time.
